Earlier this year, my mother asked me to make her a nautical themed quilt for my parents' bedroom at the lake house. She wanted something simple and very "primary and almost childlike". I immediately thought of this quilt by Ashley over at Film in the Fridge.
We decided to keep the palette quite simple: bold shades of red and blue, with some warm neutrals added in, set against a creamy white background.
When it came time to choose a fabric for the back of the quilt, we selected this gorgeous Regatta print from Michael Miller. Mom liked that the sailboats were set on a white backdrop and I liked the watercolor effect of this print. (You can see that effect better in the image above.) I added in vertical strip of leftover flags and scraps to add interest.
Since this quilt has a nautical theme, I thought it would be fun to quilt it with wavy lines. I did them free hand to keep them from being too uniform.
I suggested something striped for the binding, which should suprise exactly no one. Of the quilts featured in my Gallery, I believe almost half have striped binding. We selected the red, white, and blue stripe because it includes shades that are in the flags and because of the amount of white space between some of the stripes.
I delivered the quilt to my parents last week and am happy to report they were both very happy with their new quilt.
